Cricket and College Fundraisers

Created by ANDREW 2 years ago

As Captain of LH Cricket in 1992, Warden Pepper was a big supporter of our games played throughout England. We mostly played Sundays in “friendlies” including games against Colleges at Oxford and Cambridge. He supported us with car rental to get to the villages and counties. We did Warden Pepper and the College proud, playing 19 games that season, winning 15, drawing 3 and losing 1 (thats another story). Such was the success of the team and the great people in it (Chris Attwood, Ravi Kanan, the inimitable Kyaw Thein; Geoff Perryman; Alistair Munt; Settlar Venkataranga (apologies for the spelling) that the Warden suggested we do a couple of fundraisers in the downstairs bar to help pay for the car rental and some cricket gear as well as a tour to Menorca, Spain which he attended as our travelling unpire. We held several events for both Houses, incredibly well attended and the drinks and fun flowed easily. Myself, Mark Ryan, Kevin Lake and others volunteered as barmen and did our best to charge people for the drinks. Trouble was we knew a lot of people and were very friendly with the girls in particular. After a few of these nights the Warden called me into his office and asked for the keys to the bar back. He had done the sums - over two jam-packed nights, we had made a total profit of 22 pounds 80 pence. He thanked me by saying the morale around the place had never been better but suggested i stick to opening the batting! What a gentleman.
